This year we are launching a “Community Design Challenge” to guide the American Rescue/Recovery Plan funding to evidence-based, human centered possibilities. The “15 Minute City/Neighborhood,” the Pontiac “Superblock,” and Streets for People as best modeled by the 16 year history of the humble “Parklet” as launched by ReBar in 2005 which has now become a common staple of the American streetscape. Also known as the “Streatery” as our friends at Placemaking US and others have dubbed them and as installed by the owner of 7 North Saginaw for the Filmore 13 Brewery and others downtown have followed.

This video clip was a key piece of our second planning session for this event. The playlist has a number of community centered programming elements, sites, organizations, initiatives etc. identified that we will continue to explore during our Park(ing) Day conversations.

This year we will be hosting an in-person visit from PhD candidate Lindsay Oluyede, University of North Carolina Chapel-Hill. Her thesis is on “Design Thinking for Transportation” and she will be studying our efforts since election year 2016 on the SMART Bus Community Partnership Program, the Regional Transportation Authority Citizen Advisory Committee and on our recent initiative to adopt the Phoenix Center Bus Stop.

We are also continuing our engagement with the Global Human Cities course with Professor Annalie Campos at Oakland University and her sustained engagement of students in our downtown.
